Grounding is a way of detaching from the inner world of negative emotions when we are feeling overwhelmed. It can be useful when feeling disconnected from the present moment due to flashbacks, intrusive memories, triggers, or powerful emotions. It provides a healthy way to take a break from inner pain. Although the exercises seem simple, it is helpful to practice when we are calm, so that we can make use of them when we are in extreme distress. Like learning how to ride a bicycle, it is best to practice on steady ground, before riding down the steepest slopes. Núria Ribas guides you through the model of grounding outlined in Seeking Safety: a Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Use by Lisa Najavits. |
