Sometimes we continue to do something despite the negative consequences. It can be a maladaptive attempt to cope with our situation or our emotions. We often use unhealthy behaviours to escape, numb or otherwise manage what feels unmanageable. Unfortunately, the positive effects are short-lived and the negative consequences can be serious or even life-threatening.
If you have or worry about any of the following warning signs, then you may want to speak to someone with experience in this area:
Have you tried to cut down or stop without success?
Do you feel out of control over the behaviour?
Do you have negative consequences related to the behaviour? (health, employment, financial, and legal problems, family and relationship conflicts)
Do you do it more than you did previously to get the same effects?
Do you spend a lot of time thinking about doing it or recovering from its after-effects?
Fortunately, there are ways to overcome unhealthy behaviour. By better understanding the purpose of the behaviour, and by developing other healthier coping strategies, you can reach your goals.
